Whales off the Coast of Hans Lolick Island

We were sitting on our deck yesterday afternoon when a mother humpback whale jumped out of the ocean in front of us, leaving nothing but tail touching the waves!  She and her calf played in the water between St. Thomas and Hans Lolick Island for nearly an hour as we watched.  The mother floated on top while the calf dove and rolled around her, flippers pointed towards the sun.  We were not able to take any pictures worth sharing but we enjoyed the beautiful display through our binoculars and captured the images in our minds.

Valentine’s Day Sunset Ride

We enjoyed a romantic dinner on VIBE1 yesterday for Valentine’s Day.  The seas were beautiful and the sunset colors bounced off the clouds from one end of the sky to the other.  It was a peaceful low-key way to spend Valentine’s and we loved it!

Humpback Whales Back in the VI

The Humpback Whales are back in the Virgin Islands!  They migrate down here in January and stay through the end of March to give birth in our warm waters.

While on charter yesterday, Sam heard one was spotted on the North-side of Tortola and rode over to check it out.  There was a large pod of dolphin swimming with the whale but unfortunately they only saw the dolphins.   Maybe next time!

Rasta Fair Update

We had a great time at the Rastafari Fair!  If you are in town, we highly recommend it for a true St. Thomas experience.  They have food, crafts, local bands and lots of wonderful people.

We bought fresh okra, green tomatoes, locally-made soursop jelly and honey and snow cones made with fresh passion fruit!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

It snowed in Atlanta on Christmas day for the first time since 1840 and a powerful blizzard is sweeping across the entire Northeast with 2 feet of snow expected so it seems like the perfect time to say….the high in St. Thomas today is 85:)

Come back to the islands Mon where it is hot hot hot and the only thing you have to shovel is sand into a bucket!

Holidays in the Caribbean

The Virgin Islands is a wonderful place to spend the holidays.  Even though it is warm everyone is filled with the spirit of the season AND we can go to the beach too!

Christmas in the Caribbean means guavaberry wine, johnny cakes and song lyrics such as “How will Santa get here?  There are no reinder in my country, he’ll have to borrow me neighbor’s donkey!”  Here is another Caribbean classic by King Obstinate called “Ma Ma Bake Your Johnny Cake” YouTube Preview Image

Enjoy the season!

Water Spout

As Sam and I were watching the north swells rolling in this morning we noticed some storm clouds also heading our way.  As we continued to watch the bank of clouds, a water spout (a tornado formed over water) popped out!  They are fascinating to watch because they pull the water up into themselves.  If you look at the picture closely, you can see the white spot of churned up water below the spout.

Brown-Throated Parakeets

We do have parrots here in the Virgin Islands (actually they are parakeets)!  They are green and orange and very noisy.  They mostly live on the North side of St. Thomas.  We love to hear their squawks in the distance and always run to the porch hoping to catch a glimpse of them.  The two parakeets in the picture put on a good show for us while they ate  the fresh green Flamboyant seed pods!
